Frequently Asked Questions about MOTs
What is an MOT?
MOT tests are legally-required annual examinations of all vehicles over 3 years old. Vehicles are inspected to ensure they are still roadworthy as they age – that they are safe for you, and that their emissions are safe for the environment. It doesn't cover the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox.
You can see a full list of MOT checks on cars on the government's site.
If it passes, this will be recorded in the government's MOT database, and you will get a Pass certificate and a list of any minor or advisory issues that need attention soon but aren't currently failing.
When do I need an MOT?
Your first test should be carried out no later than the 3rd anniversary of its registration date. Vehicles such as ambulances, taxis, or private passenger vehicles with more than 8 seats need to be tested on their 1st anniversary.
Subsequent tests should be carried out no later than the anniversary date since the last one.
You can get a test up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date. For example, if your MOT runs out on 7th February then 8th January is the earliest you can get an MOT to keep the same renewal date of 7th February.
You can have the test done earlier than this 'grace' month, but your renewal date will change.
What if my car fails its MOT?
If your vehicle has ‘dangerous’ or ‘major’ problems you will fail the test. It will be recorded in the government's MOT database and you will get a ‘refusal of an MOT test certificate’ from the test centre.
You can still drive it if your current MOT certificate is still valid and the problems were not ‘dangerous’.
As we are a fully functioning garage, rather than just an MOT test centre, we carry common spares and can order most other parts in same day so that we can easily repair and retest your vehicle as fast as possible.
What do I do if my MOT has run out?
If your MOT has expired you cannot drive your vehicle on the road or you risk prosecution.
If you have a booked MOT test you can drive it to the test centre.
If you need repairs first, you can drive it to or from the garage.
